Centering Prayer – Tuesdays – 2:00-3:00PM
The Centering Prayer group meets every Tuesday from 2:00-3:00PM in the Lea Room of the Church House.
Centering Prayer is a simple method of silent meditation which cultivates inner peace and helps us be more aware of the presence and activity of God in our lives.
In our meeting, we begin with twenty minutes of meditation (or “resting in God”) followed by a short time of sharing about our practice, and then we finish by reading from a book about Centering Prayer.
Feel free to come occasionally or come every week. Please contact Elizabeth Clemmitt with any questions at .
A Basic Guide to Centering Prayer
- Choose a “sacred word” or words as the symbol of your intention to consent to God’s presence and action within. (Examples: Love, Peace, God, Jesus, Silence, Stillness, Calm, Faith, Trust, Yes; or in other languages: Amor, Shalom, Amen.)
- Sitting comfortably and with eyes closed, settle briefly and then silently introduce the sacred word(s) you have chosen as the symbol of your consent to “rest in God.”
- When you become aware of thoughts, return ever-so-gently to the sacred word.
- You may set a timer for twenty minutes (or five or ten if you are new to this practice.) At the end of the prayer period, come out of the silence slowly, perhaps with a familiar prayer.
